Western North Carolina’s Retaining Wall Specialists

Turning Steep Lots into Usable Space
Since 2005, VanWyck LanDesign has been solving sloped, hard-to-use yards across Asheville, Hendersonville, and Western North Carolina, led by owner Dave VanWyck’s 32 years of field experience. As a certified brick and retaining wall specialist and an Unilock Authorized Contractor, we build engineered retaining walls that turn steep Blue Ridge Mountain lots into level, usable space for a patio, garden bed, or driveway. Every wall is built with proper drainage and a compacted base designed to hold up through our region’s freeze-thaw winters, and every installation is backed by our one-year workmanship warranty.

Designed for the Mountain Grade

Retaining Walls
Sloped terrain is one of the defining challenges of building in the mountains, but it doesn’t have to limit what you can do with your property. As a certified brick and retaining wall specialist and an Unilock Authorized Contractor, we design and build engineered retaining walls — in natural stacked stone or Unilock segmental block, depending on the look and load your project calls for — that hold back a slope, create level terraces, and open up flat space for a patio, driveway, or garden bed that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Every wall starts below grade, with proper drainage behind the wall and a compacted base sized to the wall’s height and the soil it’s holding back, so it performs through Western North Carolina’s freeze-thaw winters instead of heaving or bowing over time. Where a grade change calls for it, we tie in natural stone steps so the transition between levels feels deliberate rather than abrupt, and a retaining wall can also become the foundation for a hillside waterfall built right into the stonework. Every retaining wall we build is backed by our one-year workmanship warranty. Request a free estimate and let us help you make the most of every square foot of your property.
Three Things a Good Retaining Wall Does

Reclaims Usable Space
A retaining wall turns a steep, unusable slope into level, functional space — room for a patio, a garden bed, or simply a yard that’s safe to walk across. We build in natural stacked stone or Unilock segmental block, matched to your home’s style and the height and load the wall needs to carry.

Integrates Stone Steps
Wherever a retaining wall creates a change in elevation, natural stone steps make that transition safe and intentional rather than awkward. We cut and fit each step to match the surrounding stonework, so the path from one level of your yard to the next feels like a single, deliberate design.

Controls Erosion & Drainage
A retaining wall’s real job happens behind the stone — properly compacted backfill and drainage that moves water away from the wall instead of letting it build up and push against it. We engineer every wall’s base and drainage to hold back soil and manage runoff through Western North Carolina’s heavy seasonal rain and freeze-thaw cycles.
