Western North Carolina’s Water Feature Builders

The Sound of Water, Without the Upkeep
Since 2005, VanWyck LanDesign has been designing and building custom water features for homeowners across Asheville, Hendersonville, and Western North Carolina, led by owner Dave VanWyck’s 32 years of field experience. Every feature we build runs on a low-maintenance pondless system — water recirculates through a hidden underground basin rather than sitting in open standing water, so you get the sight and sound of a natural waterfall or stream without the algae, debris, mosquitoes, and upkeep that come with a traditional pond. From a small courtyard fountain tucked beside a patio to a dramatic multi-tiered waterfall cascading down a hillside retaining wall, our horticulturally trained team designs and builds water features engineered to last through mountain winters and backed by our one-year workmanship warranty.

The Art of Moving Water

Water Features & Pondless Waterfalls
There is nothing quite like the sound of moving water to turn a backyard into a retreat. VanWyck LanDesign designs and builds custom water features — cascading waterfalls, meandering streams, and courtyard fountains — using native stacked stone sourced right here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We build exclusively on a pondless system: rather than an open pond that requires constant skimming, algae treatment, and winterizing, water is pulled from a hidden underground reservoir, pumped up through the rock work, and recirculated back down again. The result is all the ambiance of a natural waterfall with none of the standing water, so there’s no koi pond to maintain and far less risk of mosquitoes breeding in your backyard. Every installation is engineered for reliability first: properly sized pumps and filtration, freeze-protected plumbing that can handle a Blue Ridge winter, and rock work that looks as though it grew there naturally rather than being installed.
Three Ways to Bring Water to Your Landscape

Pondless Waterfalls
Our most popular water feature, a pondless waterfall cascades down natural stacked stone into a hidden underground basin rather than an open pond — delivering the sight and sound of a mountain waterfall with none of the algae, debris, or mosquito concerns. Built from native Western North Carolina stone, each waterfall is sized and shaped to fit the natural grade of your yard, from a gentle single drop beside a patio to a dramatic multi-tiered cascade down a hillside.

Meandering Streams
A stream lets moving water travel through your landscape rather than staying in one place, winding past planting beds, stepping stones, and seating areas on its way back to the pondless reservoir. Streams pair beautifully with a waterfall as their source, or can stand on their own as a quiet ribbon of water bordered by moss, boulders, and native plantings — a favorite for properties with a gentle slope to follow.

Courtyard Fountains
For smaller spaces — a front entry, a patio corner, or a tight courtyard — a custom stone fountain delivers the sound of water without the footprint of a full waterfall or stream. We design each fountain to complement the surrounding hardscape and landscape lighting, giving you a self-contained, low-maintenance water feature that still runs on the same reliable pondless system as our larger installations.
